Yesterday I got the email from YouTube about the new terms I must agree to as a partner. They are working on a new ads-free upcoming subscription based service. Given the struggles of many Youtubers seeing declining revenue to pay for content, this has me worried. I’m concerned about my contributions to YouTube and income from them through my Partner account.
“We’re excited to build on this momentum by taking another big step in favor of choice: offering fans an ads-free version of YouTube for a monthly fee. By creating a new paid offering, we’ll generate a new source of revenue that will supplement your fast growing advertising revenue.”
The downside of this is if you want to stay viable you HAVE to AGREE, otherwise its reported they will turn all your videos to “Private.” So its a do or die proposition. You must adapt to Youtube or else. Once again another example of the fault in building your castle on online property that isnt yours.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I was alarmed at first, but then later remembered all the people complaining about paying for the new Tidal music service and how people put up with ads on Facebook.
Maybe nothing will change much. It certainly wont help Youtube as competitors are taking away top talent and eyeballs to other new startups while Youtube is trying to compete with Netflix.
I guess we will see what the offering becomes. Do you hate YouTube advertising so bad you’d pay $10 or $20 a month to skip the ads? I wouldnt. Given that the majority of Youtube’s audience are teens I dont think they care much either.
What do you think?
